"Turin Cathedral, constructed in the fifteenth century, is most famous today for being the home of the Shroud of Turin. However, it was also the first major Renaissance building in the city. The Shroud of Turin is one of the Catholic Church's most holy relics. Believed by some to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, it bears the ghostly outline of the back and front of a man. The Shroud passed into the hands of the House of Savoy, the rulers of Turin, in 1453. From 1357 it had been owned by a French knight called Geoffroi de Charny, and although its provenance cannot be reliably traced before this date, it may well have been housed in several locations, including Jerusalem, Edessa, and Constantinople. The Shroud was brought to Turin Cathedral in 1578 and, since the seventeenth century, has had its own chapel, a fine and dramatic example of Baroque architecture. In 1988 the age of the Shroud's cloth was submitted to carbon dating, which placed it in the period 1260 to 1390. The Catholic Church accepted the results but insists its authenticity has no bearing on its positión as an object of veneration. In 1997 the chapel was damaged by fire, although fortunately a fireman was able to carry the Shroud to safety. The Shroud is rarely shown to the public- it was last brought out in 2000, and is next scheduled to be shown in 2025-however, it can be viewed via video link from the Museum of the Shroud in the Chapel. Regardless of the true nature of the Shroud, it has been an object of devotion for centuries and remains an important relic for millions of Christians."

"Due i motivi alla base del primato: il primo è architettonico, dal momento che è l’unica chiesa cittadina in stile rinascimentale; il secondo, invece, ha a che fare con la Sacra Sindone, il lenzuolo che avrebbe coperto Gesù dopo la morte e su cui sarebbe rimasta impressa l’immagine del volto. Per ospitare questo rettangolo di lino, su cui storici e archeologi discutono ancora, nel 1666 Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia demandò all’architetto Guarino Guarini la costruzione di una grande cappella. I lavori, durati 28 anni, consegnarono alla città di Torino un capolavoro dell’arte barocca che per ben 300 anni ha custodito la reliquia della Sindone. Poi nel 1997 un incendio dovuto a un guasto dell’impianto elettrico distrusse gran parte degli interni del Duomo. Per fortuna, i Vigili del Fuoco riuscirono a portare in salvo la Sindone da quel momento ospitata in una teca speciale in grado di garantirne la migliore conservazione. Detto a grandi linee della Cappella e della Sindone (visibile solo in occasione delle ostensioni disposte dalla curia), ci sono anche altri aspetti che val la pena approfondire. Dalla facciata in marmo bianco, alla torre campanaria, al Museo Diocesano, fino alla riproduzione dell’Ultima Cena di Leonardo Da Vinci (opera di Luigi Cagna, sulla parete opposta all’altare maggiore), il Duomo di San Giovanni Battista è tappa imperdibile di una vacanza a Torino. "Au coeur de la ville antique, à quelques pas des vestiges romains, le Duomo ou Basilica Cattedrale di San Giovannio Battista (cathédrale) est le seul exemple architectural Renaissance de Turin. Construit en l'honneur de saint Jean-Baptiste, patron de la ville, entre 1491 et 1498 à la demande de l'évêque Domenico della Rovere, il s'élève à l'emplacement de trois églises médiévales. Au XVII e  siècle, Guarino Guarini participa à la restructuration de l'édifice et à l'adjonction de la Chapelle du Saint-Suaire, où se trouve actuellement le linceul mystérieux, protégé à l'intérieur d'un coffre ignifugé et visible uniquement pendant les ostensions. Revêtue de marbre blanc, la façade du Duomo se distingue au milieu du paysage urbain turinois. Trois élégants portails donnent accès à une structure en croix latine, avec trois nefs et des éléments décoratifs gothiques. Le pavement est en marbre noir, alors que les parois s'éclaircissent en hauteur. D'importants travaux de restructuration sont encore en cours suite à un incendie qui ravagea la chapelle du Saint-Suaire en 1997. Remarquez l'intrigante méridienne astrologique à l'extérieur sur la paroi droite de la cathédrale."
