"No. 79 Worlds 100 Best Bars 2023 (48 in 2020) The sumptuously appointed basement Bar High Five, with its wood panelling and green velvet banquettes, is the home of Hidetsugu Ueno, the man who has done more than anyone else to introduce Japanese bartending to the world. These days you will usually see him playing bar back to his head bartender, Kaori Kurakami. Regulars have their opinions on who you want making which drink (her for the Bamboo, him for the White Lady), but the truth is that after a decade working side by side, they are both hitting the same targets with equal precision. There is no menu at Bar High Five, instead, the staff consult you — in English, Japanese or Mandarin — on your likes and dislikes and read your disposition before delivering a classic, a twist on a classic, or one of their house originals. You can, of course, ask for exactly what you want, and their Hojicha (roasted tea) Old Fashioned is always a good choice."
