"Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel and Arjav Ezekiel form the power couple morphing a New York fine-dining background into a strong focus on local artisan farmers and winemakers. The result is lavish-approachable, forever-changing seasonal American menu with French and Italian influences. Don’t miss the handmade pasta of the day (it’s first-come-first-serve until sold out), steak aligned with peppercorn sauce and fingerlings, or swirling seasonal vanilla soft serve with guest appearances by citrus-flavored olive oil or gala apples. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of their popups folded in during the year consisting of one-time menus with creative edge."

"By now, you’ve probably heard some buzz about Birdie’s, the new natural wine bar and cafe on East 12th. They don’t take reservations—so be ready to wait in line—then grab a glass of wine (or two) to keep you company. The regularly changing menu is made up mostly of small plates pulling from American, Italian, and French influences. Order the beef tartare with pecans and shiitake or one of their handmade pasta dishes, then prepare to not stop talking about it for the next two days. This is the type of cozy neighborhood cafe you’d expect to find in bigger cities—somewhere you could just as easily bring a date or pop in for a solo bite and a glass of wine—but somehow hasn’t really existed in Austin (until now)."

"Birdie’s is an order-at-the-counter natural-wine bar and cafe recently opened in an old taqueria by a talented young couple who relocated from New York. It could be the stuff of a “Saturday Night Live” sketch about gentrified East Austin. The reality is that relaxing on Birdie’s back patio with the chef Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel’s bright, graceful food — golden-crusted panisse, steak tartare folded with shiitakes and pecans, roasted local eggplant and peppers with stewed field peas — is to be on the leading edge of what makes eating great in this booming town. Don’t miss the vanilla soft-serve, drizzled in olive oil pressed with tangerines. Sure, the line at Birdie’s may be long, but it doesn’t feel like it when you’re drinking a sunset-colored bottle of pét-nat, hand-picked by self-described wine guy Arjav Ezekiel and housed in its own little portable iced wine bag. Once you get to the counter, you’ll order from a highly seasonal menu of nothing-but-hits from chef Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel, who co-owns the restaurant with Arjav (the two are married). You’ll then walk outside, past the open kitchen, and settle in the yard at one of the white picnic tables. The dishes you ordered counterside will stream out: bright salads, locally famous minute steak with smashed fingerlings, and whatever handmade pasta the chef is making that day (on our visit, soft nubs of cavatelli in a creamy sauce with parmesan, lemon, and dandelion leaves). You’ll order another bottle of wine, maybe some house-made vanilla soft serve with blood orange Agrumato, and linger until the sun sets—or until you start feeling bad for all the people still waiting in line. What to order: Minute Steak ($32); fresh pasta of the day ($19); whatever seasonal snacks and small plates strike your fancy."
