"Of all the private, old-world clubs in Manhattan, the National Arts Club is one that you must experience. It's located across the street from Gramercy Park, the glorious, gated park accessible only to privileged nearby residents lucky enough to have a key. That air of exclusivity extends to this 1840s Victorian Gothic Revival masterpiece. Most people don't realize that their regular art exhibitions are open to the public. A quick visit here is like being a club member for an hour without the hefty dues. Step through the front door and see the grandeur of the place with its inlaid floors, dark paneled walls, and shimmering chandeliers. As you make your way to the first-floor gallery, you'll pass a hallway filled with the glorious portraits of demure Gilded Age beauties. And anchoring it all is an enormous wooden newel post lamp in the shape of a goddess. You get the idea she has seen a lot of drama standing here all these years. The club was established in 1898 to gather artists of all genres as well as art lovers and patrons. The mission remains the same today, and they rotate a variety of exhibitions in their four galleries. It might be a series of photographs celebrating the beauty and grace of black women by Kamoinge Inc., a pioneering collective of African and African-American photographers. Or it could be selections from the club's archives, including tidbits from famous past members such as a letter from actress Lillian Hellman asking club board members to stop their gossip. The history here is deep and rich. It is worthwhile to keep your eye on the exhibits schedule to make sure you get to see them all. Try to peek at the little portrait gallery on the first-floor landing. Every inch of the wall space is hung with an amazing collection of sketches and photographs including dozens of past recipients of club awards. Standing inside this sanctuary of civility in Gramercy Park, you can sense its great history."
