"Originally established in 1870, La Samaritaine is one of Paris’s oldest department stores. After falling into disrepair and being closed for 16 years, the Art Nouveau and Art Deco landmark reopened in 2021 as a design-driven emporium that blends old-world glamour with innovation. Now owned by French luxury goods company LVMH, the retail space is a destination for those looking to shop a mix of luxury labels and emerging designers. And thanks to an $894 million renovation that has restored the building to its former glory, it’s also a magnet for architecture lovers. Inside, a grand oak staircase decorated with 16,000 gold leaves beckons shoppers to explore over three floors—the largest of its kind in Europe. If money is no object, head to L’Appartement, a hidden private shopping space designed by French design agency Atelieramo where you can consult with a personal shopper to call in designer purses and shoes that you can try on in the comfort of your own Parisian-style apartment. Those on a budget should hit the street-level concept boutique Loulou, where you’ll find stationary, tote bags, and mugs emblazoned with patterns inspired by Samaritaine’s colorful Art Nouveau architecture, as well as pop-up collaborations with local artists and designers. It’s a perfect place to grab souvenirs, gifts, or a smaller memento if you don't want to commit to that designer bag just yet. Don’t miss the Cinq Mondes spa in the basement, which boasts seven cozy treatment rooms and a hammam."
