Built by industrialist Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), it was once a lavish home that has been turned into a museum. Visitors feel like guests as they take in masterpiece paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts. But it is the beloved Fragonard Room that may well be the most romantic room in the city. And the fascinating story behind it is a tale of love, rejec tion, and rebuilding. It all began with a mistress. Comtesse du Barry, the lover of French King Louis XV, was building a pleasure pavilion near Paris. In 1771, she asked Jean-Honoré Fragonard to paint four canvases depicting the stages of love: the pursuit, a secret meeting, marriage, and reading love letters. The towering canvases are filled with glorious gardens, frothy brushwork, and courtly love. They are exceedingly romantic, and yet the Comtesse wasn't pleased. She refused the paintings and returned them to Fragonard. Years later, the artist installed them in his cousin's villa in southern France, and he painted seven additional canvases. The works remained there for some 100 years, until American banker J.P. Morgan purchased the paintings for his London townhouse. But when Morgan died, Frick saw an opportunity. In 1915, he bought the entire suite. Even though Frick had just moved into his mansion, he had his new drawing room reconfigured to make room for the paintings. Special wood paneling, or boiserie, was made in France to frame the paintings perfectly. Textiles from an iconic French fabric maker adorn the windows. Even exquisite hardware graces the doors. A century later, the Fragonard Room remains a treasure in the history of art. Surrounded by exquisite furniture and porcelain, it's a pastel nod to 18th-century France - and a bold tribute to love and opportunity."

C'est peut-être pourquoi les New-Yorkais adorent la Frick Collection, rêve réalisé d'un magnat des aciéries de Pittsburgh, Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), qui souhaitait laisser à la postérité l'image d'un mécène américain moderne. Le nom commun argotique français fric " est d'ailleurs un dérivé du nom de famille du richissime collectionneur, précurseur dans le marché mondial de l'art et prêt à proposer des fortunes pour les oeuvres d'art qu'il souhaitait acquérir coûte que coûte. Mécène donc, mais aussi farouchement antisyndicaliste, Frick fut responsable du massacre des ouvriers de la Homestead Steel. Il consacra une grande partie de son immense fortune et 40 années de sa vie à l'achat des merveilles qui sont suspendues aux cimaises de son opulente demeure bâtie en 1913 sur la 5th Avenue, en face de Central Park.La maison, dont la majeure partie est laissée en l'état d'origine, comporte 19 salles meublées dans le style XVIIIe siècle, anglais et français. 1 100 pièces de premier ordre : que des oeuvres de grands maîtres, et souvent parmi les plus belles, sinon les plus personnelles. "Cette maison, ouverte au public en 1932, ne ressemble en rien à l'idée que l'on se fait d'un musée traditionnel. C'est peut-être pourquoi les New-Yorkais adorent la Frick Collection, rêve réalisé d'un magnat des aciéries de Pittsburgh, Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), qui souhaitait laisser à la postérité l'image d'un mécène américain moderne. Le nom commun argotique français " fric " est d'ailleurs un dérivé du nom de famille du richissime collectionneur, précurseur dans le marché mondial de l'art et prêt à proposer des fortunes pour les oeuvres d'art qu'il souhaitait acquérir coûte que coûte. Mécène donc, mais aussi farouchement antisyndicaliste, Frick fut responsable du massacre des ouvriers de la Homestead Steel. Il consacra une grande partie de son immense fortune et 40 années de sa vie à l'achat des merveilles qui sont suspendues aux cimaises de son opulente demeure bâtie en 1913 sur la 5th Avenue, en face de Central Park. La maison, dont la majeure partie est laissée en l'état d'origine, comporte 19 salles meublées dans le style XVIII e  siècle, anglais et français. 1 100 pièces de premier ordre : que des oeuvres de grands maîtres, et souvent parmi les plus belles, sinon les plus personnelles. Bellini, Boucher, Bruegel, Chardin, David, Delacroix, Degas, Fragonard, Gainsborough, Goya, El Greco, Ingres, Lawrence, Lorrain, Manet, Monet, Piero della Francesca, Rembrandt, Renoir, Rubens, de La Tour, Van Dyck, Van Eyck, Velázquez, Vermeer, Tiepolo, Titien, Véronèse, Watteau, Whistler... Dans la galerie ouest (la plus riche), on admirera, se faisant face, deux remarquables Turner et, placés côte à côte, un autoportrait de Rembrandt et son énigmatique Cavalier polonais. Pêle-mêle, on citera quatre très beaux tableaux du peintre américain Whistler, un étonnant Bronzino, le Portrait de l'Arétin par le Titien, le Portrait de sir Thomas More par Holbein le Jeune. Vous irez certainement vous asseoir dans le jardin sous verrière, où, bercé par le murmure de la fontaine, vous goûterez à la paix de cette oasis des beaux-arts. Une galerie récente abrite des expositions permanentes d'oeuvres issues de la collection ou bien provenant d'autres musées. Cette petite galerie est accessible par un escalier en spirale escarpé situé à l'extérieur du hall d'entrée, peu visible et facile à manquer si vous n'en connaissez pas l'existence."
