"Cette terrasse qui surplombe le lac (The Lake), et qui offre donc une vue privilégiée et particulièrement romantique sur les barques qui s'y baladent, accueille des performances artistiques quasiment tous les jours. Le passage couvert qui y mène lorsqu'on arrive par le sud est doté d'un très beau plafond, le Minton Tile Ceiling qui a été créé dans les années 1860, et est souvent occupé par des musiciens. Le lieux abrite également une fontaine, la Bethesda Fountain, qui ressemble à s'y méprendre à celle que l'on voit dans le générique de Friends, mais la scène a en réalité été tournée en studio. "

The fountain was dedicated in 1873 and the statue, Angel of the Waters, in 1842. The Spanish-style detailing of the double staircase with tiles and friezes was done by Jacob Mould. The terrace is a popular place for photos and a pleasant area to relax. The Bethesda Fountain is located in front of the Bethesda Terrace. If you pass through the Bethesda Terrace, you will emerge on Central Park Mall. --- The formal terrace was considered the heart of the park by the designers. The central feature is the famous Bethesda Fountain with its Angel of the Waters statue. This statue is the only statue in the park that was specifically commissioned for the park. The terrace and fountain get their names from the Gospel of John, where a pool called Bethesda with healing waters is referenced. This was all dedicated in honor of the Croton Aqueduct System, the water supply system that gives New York its drinking water today. The creation of the aqueduct was a huge leap forward in New York’s development and it greatly reduced disease in the city and also helped decrease the number of fires in New York. In the statue, the angel has her hand out, blessing the water for New York. The lily on her other hand represents the purity of the water. This area is seen in dozens of films and TV shows, including Law and Order, Sex and the City, Enchanted, and Elf.
