"PERFECT FOR: SMALL PLATES DRINKING GOOD COCKTAILS Billed as NYC’s first Filipino-Japanese izakaya, Gugu Room is serving a rarely-seen combination of cuisines on the LES. The menu here is mostly Filipino with some Japanese influence—and the dishes work unexpectedly well, like Bon Iver on a Kanye track. Come here on a date and split the slightly funky kare-kare with fall-off-the-bone short rib and the cod katsu sisig with a creamy mayo sauce and tiny, potent chopped red chilis. Or bring a few friends (not too many because the dining room is pretty small) and eat the juicy longanisa, perfectly-cooked ribeye skewers, and a few other small plates while having a few bottles of sake and beer. That’s the best way to enjoy this place."
