"UNESCO World Heritage Popularly known as Dalbutsuden, the Kon-do of Todai-i temple was built to house the colossal statue of the Great Buddha (Daibutsu). Nara was the capital of Japan for most of the eighth century, and Tödai-ji served as the center of state Buddhism. The original timber frame hall, built in 758, was a structure on a much grander scale than the present Daibutsuden. Inside the hall stands the bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha, the central deity of the Flower Garland Sutra. This 52-foot- (16-m-) high Buddha is believed to have been the largest bronze casting made in the ancient world. Its construction was the eighth-century emperor Shomu's conscious attempt to emulate the architectural plans of Empress Wu of Tang China, who had created many Buddhist images. The Eye-Opening Ceremony, the official completion ceremony for the Buddha, was held in 752 under the direction of the Indian monk Bodhisena, with thousands of monks in attendance. The construction of Daibutsuden began after this ceremony. Burned down in 1180, the original hall was rebuilt in 1185. The new hall was in turn destroyed by fire during civil wars in 1567, and the homeless Buddha's head was blown off in 1610 It was only in 1692 that the statue was repaired and the hail the third reconstruction to be built on the same site- was rebuilt in 1709."
