"Bib Gourmand 2025 With a line that’s almost always stretching out the front door, this hot spot in St. Marks Place remains one of the best places for elegant Shanghainese cooking. The décor itself is noteworthy: Red and cream lanterns add to the imperial décor with nooks and crannies snaking throughout. The menu is lengthy and there are plenty of familiar favorites to choose from, but first try asking the server about some regional highlights. Chicken soaked in Shaoxing wine; stir-fried rice cakes with pork and leeks; and peach resin stew with crabmeat are all worth consideration. Oddly enough, a recent stunner came straight out of the Sichuan lexicon: House special fish stew with Sichuan peppercorns is a must-order feast. There is also a second location in Flushing."

"With its elegant thatched-roof dining room, twinkling waterfalls, and sophisticated menu of dishes from China’s Jiangnan region, CheLi feels worlds away from the St. Marks madness teeming just beyond its front door. The atmosphere is festive—especially when larger groups of stylish locals or nostalgic expats fill the sleek, lantern-lit booths—but never too loud to not hear your dining companions. The expansive menu spans crowd-pleasers like pillowy, porky soup dumplings and stir-fried rice cakes as well as specialities like tender chicken or chilled crab cooked in Shaoxing wine. Plan to share everything you order with your dining companions, and don't be afraid to ask the polished servers for recommendations on portions, how to course your meal, or drinks pairings advice—the bar serves a short but thoughtfully curated list of beer and wine, plus sake, Chinese rice wine, teas, and non-alcoholic drinks."

"Pete Wells' 2024 list of top 100 #15. Very nice atmosphere and setting. Service felt a bit rushed. Food is good. Overall a bit overrated. Kung Pao Chicken, Braised Rice with Mushrooms, Truffle Pork Dumplings, Pan Fried Wontons, Crispy Duck (a bit overrated)."

"East Village Shanghainese Chinese When the Shanghainese CheLi opened two doors down from sister restaurant Szechuan Mountain House on St. Marks Place last November, it only offered its food to go. But now the fantastically elaborate dining room is open, its bamboo-hut-like booths attracting Chinese expats and regional-Chinese-food lovers of all ages and stripes. The menu, like the mazelike décor, offers surprises at every turn, including the showstopping giant Song Dynasty steam bun. Much of the cooking is based on centuries-old recipes, but for something more contemporary, try chef Qiling Wang’s tofu-and-egg-drop soup thickened with sea urchin."
