"Semma is a Michelin-starred restaurant led by chef Vijay Kumar that presents bold, deeply authentic cuisine from Tamil Nadu in southern India—drawing on his childhood in regional villages and his grandmother’s kitchen. The dishes are unapologetically rooted in heritage, with vibrant spice profiles, unexpected ingredients (like snails and venison), and crisp fermented dosas that don’t bow to Westernised expectations. The space marries elegance with comfort, inviting diners to lean into a rich, regional narrative rather than a familiar version of Indian food."

"Indian Highlights include the crunchy Mangalorean cauliflower and a masala-potato-filled gunpowder dosa that tastes like cheese even though there’s none present."

"What is it? Another win from the Unapologetic Foods crew, Semma brings the rural cuisine of Southern Indian cuisine to Greenwich Village. The Michelin Guide is also a fan, as the restaurant is currently the only Michelin-starred Indian restaurant in the country. Why we love it? The menu journeys through Vijay Kumar’s upbringing in Tamil, India, many dishes of which have been unseen in the States. While the gunpowder dosas are reason enough to visit, the tamarind-laced snail dish Nathai Piratta should be added to your starters, while the fragrant and fall-apart lamb found in the Attu Kari Sukka is enough to keep you (and us) coming back time and time again."

"27.01.26 | Mahi, Rasi — good but not worth the buzz! Dosa was genuinely exceptional, followed by lobster, beef and lamb chops | drinks really strong // disappointing mushrooms 1 Michelin star 2025 [‘22-25] (First 🇮🇳 to get it in NYC) #1 New York Times top 100 2025 20th on The Infatuation Top 25 2025 Executive Chef Vijay Kumar (2025 James Beard Award Winner) Mahira’s reco Chef Vijay Kumar, most recently of San Francisco's Rasa, switched coasts to run the show at Semma, where regional south Indian cuisine is on full display. This is authentic Indian cooking that doesn't pander to American expectations, and if some of the dishes are unfamiliar, lean on the staff who know their stuff and are eager to share. One bite in and you'll quickly learn that this cooking is all heart. Dishes are spicy, but the heat is used as elegantly as it is liberally. Start with the mulaikattiya thaniyam, the chef's childhood snack that bursts with flavor. The gunpowder dosa, a classic rice and lentil crepe filled with potato masala, is on every table for a reason. Attu kari sukka is falling-apart tender lamb in a dark brown curry redolent of warm spices 💲Owners: Roni Mazumdar (from Kolkata) and Chintan Pandya (Unapologetic Foods)"
