Park Avenue Armory

"It's one of the most extraordinary rooms in New York City, and yet it's hidden away inside an armory. The Veterans Room is a tour de force of shimmering tiles, carved woodwork, and immense iron chan-deliers. This room, along with the library next door, are the only fully intact interiors in the world designed by Louis C. Tiffany, Associated Artists. Back in 1881, this young group was headed by designer Louis Comfort Tiffany and architect Stanford White. You can see their remarkable work up close on private tours. This is not your average ammunition depot. The Seventh Regiment was the only privately funded armory in the US. It became known as the Silk Stocking regiment because of the elite group who belonged - names like Vanderbilt, Roosevelt, and Harriman. These prominent families were building grand homes nearby, and they lavished equal attention on the armory, employing the same innovative artisans and builders. Room after room, there are touches of the Aesthetic Movement throughout, with an emphasis on the handcrafted and the exotic. Built as a military facility and a social club, the opulent reception spaces were meant for reading and taking tea. But the Veterans Room is the rare jewel. Every inch is filled with embellishment and beauty. Azure and cobalt tiles frame the fireplace, forming a sea of blue, reflecting the colors of the ocean. It was designed by Tiffany, who was barely 30 years old at the time. Then known more for his landscape paintings, he worked on the Armory before he began making stained-glass lamps. The room's architect was even younger. Stanford White was in his twenties and had just joined the firm McKim, Mead & White. He infused the space with perfect proportions and filled it with scrolled iron work. There are Celtic knots, Chinese dragons, and Persian pat-terns. The Armory is a hidden masterpiece of military magnificence."
