"#75 When chef Suthiporn “Tui” Sungkamee died in 2017, his sensitivity and largesse in helping introduce the idea of regional Thai cooking to Los Angeles came into sharp focus. His spirit lives on at Jitlada, a restaurant that’s as essential today as it was a decade ago. Jitlada captures the spirit of Southern Thai cooking better than other restaurants in Los Angeles: the steady barrage of aromatics, tongue-lashing chile heat and intricate spice blends. Kua kling, minced beef infused with a dry curry of chiles and herbs, throbs with heat and fragrant spices. Tiger prawns are plump and buttery in a pineapple-tinged curry. Steamed mussels in a spicy lemongrass broth jolt the nervous system and clear your sinuses. Come here to contemplate the perfect equilibrium of a salad made with fresh mango, shredded coconut and dried shrimp. The vast menu encompasses curries, salads, seafood specialties and the famous “Spicy Dynamite Challenge,” a custom stir-fry (your choice of frog legs, lobster or chicken) steeped in a fresh and dried Thai chile sauce that is famous for battering the senses and making grown men weep. Beer and wine. Lot parking. Credit cards accepted."

"Le restaurant Thai Town du chef-propriétaire Jazz Singsanong, avec son menu tentaculaire et son ambiance très chaleureuse, est l'un des favoris cultes de la ville et sert des Angelenos en mémoire de son frère, la légende de la cuisine thaïlandaise de Los Angeles, Tui Sungkamee."

"Bib Gourmand 2024 #75 Best Restaurant by LA Time in 2023 You'll find Jitlada in a well-worn strip mall, but its loyal following is a testament to the lingering reputation of this long-standing Southern Thai institution. The setting even has a touch of Hollywood; next to their framed awards and reviews, find illustrations by the Simpsons creator (and Jitlada super-tan)-Matt Groening. The menu, split between Thai standards and a selection of southern specialties, is nothing shy of gargantuan, but certain dishes jump off the page. A zingy salad of crispy catfish and green papaya is a favorite, and don't miss unique offerings like the bubbling-hot Taepo chicken curry with and tender morning glory stems, rich with coconut milk and aromatic warm spices, or the enticing array of "Spicy Thai Dipped Dishes.""

"East Hollywood Thai $$ Take out Few modern restaurant legends have endured like the story behind Jitlada: Chef Suthiporn “Tui” Sungkamee, who died in 2017, and his sister Sarintip “Jazz” Singsanong took over the long-running restaurant and introduced a then-untranslated back page full of radically spicy Southern Thai specialties. Those dishes have been incorporated into its 10-page English menu for a while now, but their written accessibility doesn’t mean the kitchen has diminished their incandescence. As a masterclass on regional Thai cooking, Jitlada is indispensable. The choices can overwhelm, true, though reconnecting with an old favorite can feel like rediscovering a beloved novel. It happened for me recently after ordering kaeng kung yawt khaam awn, shrimp and young tamarind pods in a soupy curry lit up with turmeric. There were shadings in its fiery, fruity-sour intricacy I’d missed before. I never forget the effect of the herbaceous jungle curry with lamb; it’s so visceral with capsicums that its ingestion borders on supernatural possession."

"My absolute favorite restaurant in the city. I could eat there every day. This Thai food is unreal and though the menu is vast, everything on it is delicious. This is a must for anyone who likes to eat. Thank you jazz for this gem. "

"deconstructed burger is good (jazz burger off menu?), dungeness crab, Thai food. Had curry chicken spring rolls which were pretty spicy but delicious. Also crying tiger beef and duck salad, both amazing. Food came out super fast, also not too crowded for dinner on a weekday. Very heavy though"
