"This beautiful Baroque palace, often referred to as "the Versailles of Spain, was built as a summer retreat for King Philip V. The new monarch was actually a Frenchman, the first Bourbon king of Spain, who had been born at the real Versailles and spent much of his life there. Philip began learning Spanish only when he acceded to the throne at the age of seventeen, in 1700. The land on which his summer palace was built had been the site of a royal hunting lodge in the fifteenth century. King Henry I had later handed the site over to the church, and a monastery dedicated to San Jerónimos was built on it. The name La Granja comes from the word for "farm," because the self-sufficient monks had run a farm on this site. There is still a church here, albeit a grand Baroque edifice very obviously built for royal clients. The church's mausoleum contains the tombs of Philip V and his second wife, Queen Isabella. La Granja de San Ildefonso stands in spectacular parkland, complete with extensive woodland and formal landscaped gardens, with elegant fountains, statuary, and a large ornamental lake. The vast building is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Guadarrama Mountains. The interiors of the palace were created by an army of the finest artisans, and the furnishings and decor include crystal chandeliers, tapestries, frescoes, Italian Carrara marble, and Japanese lacquerwork. Close to the palace is a well-known glass factory, also named La Granja, which still produces some of Spain's most exquisite glasswork. In 1918 Philip's grand palace was severely damaged by a fire. It was lovingly restored, with the local glass factory providing many of the replacement fittings, including replicas of the enormous chandeliers. Today, the Bourbon king's summer retreat is one of the region's most popular tourist attractions."

"Visita al palacio, visita a los jardines (intentar que sea cuando encienden las fuentes) y dar un paseo por el pueblo para tomar café. Tiene iglesias y edificaciones del siglo XVIII. Hay un parking junto a la rotonda de entrada al palacio a la izquierda."
