There is so much brilliance to the experience that any guest walking into the Peninsula Tokyo will feel like a mini-celeb. The building is designed like a Japanese lantern, and at night it shows—its soft pink glow merely icing for a near magical marquee. Inside, an hourglass marble walkway leads into the astounding lobby where the locus, a suspended chandelier with 1,313 bulbs, is designed to mimic fireworks. Prepare to be dazzled. What’s the crowd like? If they're a guest of the Peninsula, there's a good chance they'll be a guest of any number of other Peninsula Hotel locations throughout the world—the brand tends to inspire loyalty. Nevertheless, guests all share a sense of status and an expectation for timeless luxury. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. Even the lowest of categories, Deluxe, is only such by default—spacious is putting is mildly. Making the most out of 579-square-feet, there's sufficient room for a seating area, a dining room table, and a separate cherry and blonde wood dressing room opposite the spa-like bathroom. The natural palette is altogether pleasing with gold painted ceilings in a woven pattern, burnt orange carpets, and a leading hallway that can be sealed off with a horse-chestnut sliding door. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? What's that next to the vanity in the dressing room, a built-in nail dryer? If only this entire room, which is like a pared down cabin on a luxury train, could be installed back at home. And that little thing in the mini bar (a shiny, miniature Lavazza espresso machine)? We'll take that, too. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. In the spirit of a traditional Japanese onsen, the bathroom takes center stage with a soaking tub. There's a stand-up rainfall shower, too, and either yukata or traditional robes. Other functions, like TV screens embedded in the mirror, and all sorts of buttons to push, are as techy as the toilet. The bath products, a collaboration with Oscar de la Renta, are also a delight. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? High-speed and complimentary Wi-Fi (as if this brand would offer anything less). Room service: Worth it? The usual roster of international staples are available, while there's also an option to go Cantonese; one of the hotel's restaurants, Hei Fung Terrace, will deliver items like barbecued pork with jellyfish, for starters, and a chilled almond jelly for dessert. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why? Let's tip our hat to the spiffy bellhops bringing old-school ambience with their crisp, all-white uniforms—right up to their cap. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. For a real showstopper, Peter: The Bar is a jewel-box of a place, dark and stunning with discerning cocktails surrounded by a forest of cherry blossom trees made of glass. Bottom line: worth it, and why? If make-no-mistakes service is key, there's value to this pricey booking"

The location, in Marunouchi, is unique, adjoining the Imperial Gardens, which makes for impressive views during the daytime and the rare (for Tokyo) sight of complete darkness at night.
