"The Cockpit pub stands on the site of the former Blackfriars monastery in the south-west of the City. It was later where William Shakespeare owned a residence in the monastery gatehouse. The first pub on the site was built in 1787 and used for cock-fighting. The balcony from which spectators looked down into the pit is still part of the interior. Just off Playhouse Yard, the original site of Shakespeare’s plays. "
