This Westlake institution has been serving classic deli staples since 1947, like matzo ball soup, homemade coleslaw, and a creamy macaroni salad that’s beautifully simple. However, you’re here for the #19. It's the Langer’s signature of thick-cut pastrami sandwiched between two slices of their famous twice-baked rye and smothered in swiss cheese, dressing, and coleslaw. And while it began life as a 12-seat counter, it has transformed to a massive space-decked out with booths and that classic counter.Equally ample is the menu, with all of the requisite standards, such as latkes, blintzes and chopped liver. Breakfast is served all day, but if you're here for the first time, opt for the hot pastrami (provided by RC Provisions in Burbank) sandwich. Sugar-cured, seasoned and smoked; then piled with cheese, sauerkraut and grilled between two slices of rye-it's the king of the castle. The only way to make this meal better is to end with a slice of sinfully rich cheesecake."

"#69 During a recent lunch at this Westlake landmark I fretted over my order, debating whether to branch out from the deli’s momentous pastrami sandwich. Maybe goulash with noodles this time? Or a hot beef tongue sandwich instead, or the restaurant’s take on the roast beef French dip? The server studied me with patience and then said, “Hon, you should just order the #19 again. It’s the best thing we do.” She was right, of course. The pastrami — brined, peppered, smoked, steamed and shaved by hand into rosy kerchiefs — towers between two slices of double-baked rye bread with coleslaw, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. The world fades in the face of such perfection; it’s you, in a brown, tufted booth, with the happy cadence of clattering silverware and myriad languages ringing through the dining room. If you seek variety, try a bowl of matzo ball soup and the #28, a monster also known as the Fresser: pastrami, corned beef, tongue, turkey, Swiss, boom. May Langer’s thrive forever. Beer and wine.
