Russ & Daughters Cafe

"NYT: some of the best lox bagels in the city Monocle: This Jewish “appetising store” was opened by Joel Russ on East Houston in 1914 and hasn’t changed much since, serving fish-based takeaway fare and now run by the fourth-generation Russ family. There’s also a café around the corner."

"Russ & Daughters is a famous Jewish comfort food store and café, specialized in smoked fish, caviar and bagels. They are famous for making high quality fish bagels, even some luxury ones with caviar inside. You compose your perfect bagel starting with your bread, your flavored cream cheese and your fish (artisanally smoked in Brooklyn). The original place opened in 1914 and moved in 1920 where it is still running today, on East Houston St, Manhattan: that’s according to me the best place to go to in order to try their bagels — more authentic than the modern ones. Recommended: the best seller with everything bagel bread, scallion cream cheese and simple smoked salmon. Note: pastrami salmon is also delicious!"

"Beloved Jewish stalwart Russ & Daughters, which has been through four generations since 1914, celebrated its centenary by launching this full-service outpost on the Lower East Side. Smoked-fish aficionados are well catered for. At breakfast, there's lox (cured salmon) and eggs with babka French toast. The lightbox signs announce rugelach, bialys and schmaltz herring, and there are boxes of matzoh flatbread and jars of sweet halvah, but sturgeon takes pride of place. The egg cream (milk, soda water and vanilla or chocolate syrup) is an ideal accompaniment. Booths are fitted out with family portraits, and the venue is anchored by marble herringbone flooring and a 1950s-style counter. There's a branch in the Jewish Museum (T 212 423 3200) too. 127 Orchard Street, T212 475 4881, www.russanddaughterscafe.com"

"From white-jacketed servers to that pristine counter, this updated yet model LES café channels the very spirit and charm of its mothership, set only blocks away. The adept kitchen follows suit, taking the original, appetizing classics and turning them on their heads to form an array of proper and profoundly flavorful dishes. Regulars perch at the bar to watch the ‘tender whip up a cocktail or classic egg cream, while serious diners find a seat and get noshing on hot- and cold-smoked Scottish salmon teamed with everything-bagel chips. The result? A thrilling contrast in flavor and texture. Caramelized chocolate babka French toast is crowned with strawberries for a sweet-savory treat; and “eggs Benny” with salmon, spinach and challah never fails to peg a bruncher."
