"Dix siècles après la construction de Sainte-Sophie, le sultan Soliman le Magnifique demande à ce qu'une mosquée éclipsant cette dernière soit conçue. Ce fut chose faite! Dirigée par l'architecte Sinan, la construction de l'édifice débute en 1549 pour s'achever en 1556. Cette mosquée est moins connue que sa rivale et pourtant elle est toute aussi impressionnante."

"UNESCO World Heritage The Süleymanive Mosque is a grand structure built on the orders of, and named after, Sultan Suleiman I (Suleiman the Magnificent, 1494-1565). It was designed by Mimar Sinan, one of the great architects of his time, and architect-in-chief to Suleiman for almost 28 years. During its construction, up to 2,000 workers at a time labored on the building. Suleiman I sought to use his new mosque to rival the grandeur of the Byzantine built Hagia Sophia. The Süleymaniye Mosque is smaller than the Hagia Sophia, but it is arguably a more graceful structure It measures 194 feet (59 ml long and 190 feet (58 ml wide, the main dome is 174 feet (53 m) high and 89 feet (27 m) in diameter. It has four minarets, and domes descend in tiers from the central dome The complex housed many other structures, including a bathhouse, hospital, public kitchen to feed the poor, and several madrassa (Koran schools) In the garden behind the mosque, there are two mausoleums, housing, tbe tombs of some important figures, including those of Suleiman 1 and his wife, Roxelana. It also houses the tombs of Sultan Suleiman Il and Sultan Ahmed II In 1660 the mosque was damaged by fire and restored by Sultan Mehmed IV in a Baroque style, resulting in considerable damage to the original structure. It was returned to its original style in the nineteenth century but was damaged again during World War I when its courtyard was used as a weapons depot and ammunition ignited another major fire. The mosque was not restored again until 1956. It is a grand monument to perhaps the greatest of the Ottoman sultans and a superb example of the grace and sophistication of architecture at the peak of the Ottoman Empire. The mosque became the architectural model for all subsequent, mosques built by the sultans in Istanbul."
