"Settle into Southern classics like fried catfish, cornbread, and fried chicken. The Serving Spoon is a full-service diner serving Southern classics in a brightly-lit and energetic room. Everyone gets the fried catfish, a boneless fillet battered and beautifully browned. The fish flakes off in tender hunks, while the cornmeal crust crunches just so. Best of all is the slab of cornbread served alongside every main course. This “urban eatery” has been serving soul food in an Inglewood strip mall since 1983, a year after Harold E. Sparks relocated from Ohio and left the auto industry. Now his daughter and son-in-law run the show. Expect comfortable booths, a social wood counter, and photo-covered walls, including Martin Luther King, Jr. The Serving Spoon features a specialized take on chicken and waffles, with only chicken wing drumettes or breast meat. Order The Cookie and receive a waffle with a soft pat of butter that melts instantly, a squeeze bottle of maple syrup and a quintet of fried chicken wing drumettes. A dusting of cinnamon is available if you like. Other waffle combos include The Rambo, The Richard, and The Sparks #1, named for the local WNBA basketball squad."

"Walking into this classic diner on Centinela is like walking into the center of the neighborhood - families, big groups of friends, and solo diners who have been coming every week for 35 years, all clamoring to get The Serving Spoon’s Southern breakfast into their stomachs. No matter what day of the week you come here, expect lines out the door, but on the other side of that 45-minute wait are tremendous plates of fried catfish, chicken drumettes, and our favorite waffles in town. If you can snag a seat at the counter, do it and be treated to endless conversation with the waitstaff. "
