"The Berlin Wall is a big part of the city’s history, but there are so many different sights around Berlin that have to do with the Cold War, the Wall, and the division of Berlin. A place that often gets overlooked is the Platz des 9th November near the Bornholmer Strasse Sbahn station. This ordinary street in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood was the location where the first border crossing was opened on November 9, 1989, effectively marking the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today, segments of the original Wall remain along Bornholmer Strasse, is transformed into an open-air museum. Viewing the austere concrete barrier with its infamous "Death Strip" is a haunting reminder of the division that once sliced Berlin in half during the Cold War era. Interspersed among the Wall fragments are information plaques that recount the dramatic events of that night in 1989 when throngs of East Berliners surged through the Bornholmer Strasse checkpoint into the West.
