"Home to what many consider the best hummus in town, along with other tempting vegetarian Middle Eastern salads and baked goods, Kanaan was founded by Oz Ben David, an Israeli, and Jalil Debit, a Palestinian. A ramshackle-looking shack covered in graffiti sits close to the railroad tracks in northwestern Prenzlauer Berg. Pass through the gate into a funky outdoor area with picnic tables and sand on the ground; inside the shack, a few tables are scattered among clean and simple décor. Housemade hummus is the star here, served either straight-up or Iraqi-style with baked eggplant, a boiled egg, mango sauce, and spicy pesto. (Go on, get both.) The hummus/shakshuka mashup—hummus with a sunny side-up egg in a spicy tomato-pepper sauce with garlic and onion—also has legions of fans. Supplement with a couple of salads: the oven-roasted cauliflower with tahini, date honey, pomegranate, and spices and the roasted beets with goat cheese in an olive oil, lemon, pomegranate, and date honey sauce are both knockouts."

"Kanaan est un petit, très petit, restaurant isréalo-palestinien végétarien qui ne paie vraiment, mais vraiment pas de mine (le bâtiment est en construction, on dirait que l’on entre dans un chantier… mais non ! typiquement berlinois…). L’accueil est charmant, on nous a expliqué toute la carte pour nous aider à choisir (c’est vrai que ce n’était pas facile de s’y retrouver entre tous les types de houmous !). On s’est laissé tenter par un assortiment de « mazze » (préparations à base de légumes bien relevées) et un plat de houmous à partager… Ça ne rigole pas avec la quantité ici, donc c’était bien suffisant pour deux personnes. Le meilleur houmous de ma vie, et pour un tout petit prix en plus de tout ! Réservation plus que conseillée (possible également de prendre à emporter)."
