"Vogue - College Grounds - Overshadowing the quaint wooden-roofed Mesnevihane Mosque stands Phanar Greek Orthodox College, an elaborately designed red brick structure known among the local community as the Red Castle. And indeed, it does draw comparisons to a grand castle with its imposing tower that juts directly into the expansive sky above. Designed by Konstantinos Dimandis, one of the most important Greek architects of the 19th century, and built between 1800 and 1882, the fascinating building is embellished with arched windows and topped by a magnificent dome that houses an ancient antique telescope currently used for astronomy lessons. The streets that surround this little visited, deeply community-led neighbourhood house families who convene after work to picnic in perfectly manicured gardens, while youngsters happily play ball in the streets at dusk, not a screen in sight. After exploring the college grounds it’s worth seeking out the tiny family-run cafes of the area; each selling unique versions of addictively honeyed baklava. Enjoy it away from the city's glutinous seagulls and their piercing squawks."
