"Pauly Saal Set inside a former Jewish girls’ school in Mitte repurposed to house trendy galleries and a hipster deli, the splurge-y Pauly Saal shouts minimalistic Berlin cool. The first thing you’ll is the comfy bar, which gives way to a main room with soaring ceilings and large windows. Tasting menus range from four to seven courses, so come hungry. Most dishes here are exuberantly sauced—you’ll want to save some of the tasty house-made bread to mop them up. If it’s on the menu, the oyster with turnip cabbage and sea fennel is a standout, as is the Tiergarten crayfish with peas and beurre blanc—as local as it gets, caught in a lake in Berlin’s largest park."

"Pauly Saal The Jüdische Mädchenschule, an imposing, five-storey, dark-brick 1930 school for girls designed by Alexander Beer, was officially returned to the Jewish community in 2009. Converted by architects Grüntuch Ernst three years later, it now houses various galleries, a couple of museums and a pair of restaurants, including Pauly Saal in the former gymnasium. The interior is adorned with quirky art pieces, Muranochandeliers and ceramic Wall tiles. A large red-and-white missile by Cosima yon Bonin is mounted above the open kitchen, where Sebastian Leyer prepares seasonal French fare like lemon-buckwheat-crusted turbot with cabbage and mussels, and leek velouté with snail ravioli, radicchio and croutons. There is also a lovely courtyard garden, Auguststrasse11-13, T3300 6070, www.paulysaal.com"
