"Nigella (Insta) - 11 January 2025 - This is the last post from my Roman holiday last weekend and it's from a restaurant I first went to around 30 years ago. The venerable @dalbolognese may serve the food of Bologna, but it is a very much a Roman institution. Of course I ordered the tortellini in brodo. There is something so magnificent and yet so calmingly simple about a traditional Italian broth. It's made with chicken, veal and beef (I actually have a recipe for it in How To Eat) and, much as I love chicken stock, this limpid, pale-gold liquid is transportingly exquisite. I hadn't expected it to come so packed with the plump little dumplings, but l ate them all with remarkable ease. I'm too clumsy to make them myself, and have never been able to find any made here that can match the real thing, so it would have been a crime to leave a single one. Or, at least, I would have been in an agony of regret later if I had. This was preceded by the tenderest, pinkest Culatello di Zibello ham with crescentine (which are puffed-up snippets of fried bread dough) and a bowlful of puntarelle, that raspingly Roman salad of bitter chicory stems pulled into curls, fierce with anchovies, and followed by what I suppose one should call Dal Bolognese's signature dish, the bollito misto. Mixed boiled (though they're really poached) meats is for no good reason a hard sell to those who are unfamiliar with this great dish, and certainly it's not pretty to look at but, for all that I photographed it, it's there to be eaten not have its picture taken. My last photo is of one of the many grand frames on the beautiful terracotta-colours walls: the rest contained paintings; this one was the vent/air-conditioner. I love Italians!"

It sits on the corner of the Piazza del Popolo, and has a beautiful outdoor dining area with plants, iron chairs, and white tablecloths. Perhaps it was the view onto that square, or the food (some of the city’s best carciofi alla romana are served here, as well as, of course, spaghetti alla bolognese), which has attracted all manner of stars since it opened. Gianni Agnelli loved the salads here, as did Elton John. Karl Lagerfeld, who threw a party there for Chanel a few years ago, loved the pasta. There’s something very glamorous about sitting on the Piazza del Popolo and bumping into Tom Cruise."
