The Campbell Apartment

"In the 1923 office and reception room of financier John Williams Campbell, hidden away in an ornate corner of Grand Central Terminal, The Campbell Apartment was a converted bar known only to insiders, who treasured it as a place to sneak in a final drink before the commute home. After a high-profile renovation that restored the hand-painted ceilings, quartzite accents and brass finishes in 2017, the secret was out. The negronis are still on the menu but now there's a light lunch selection offered in collaboration with Claus Meyer's Great Northern Food Hall (see p033). Some of the other changes are more drastic - there is no longer a dress code and you can make reservations. Service runs from noon until 2am and there's live jazz on Sunday nights. 15 Vanderbilt Avenue, T212 297 1781, www.thecampbellnvc.com"

"Not a true Speakeasy but has the feeling of one. There are two ways to access the entrance. One is from street level on the corner of Vanderbilt and 43rd St. under the portico where there is a canopy with the name Campbell Apartments. The other way is from the Main Concourse of Grand Central. You need to walk up the marble staircase toward Vanderbilt Avenue and upon exiting the doors, the Campbell Terrace appears to your left."

"Originally the Campbell apartment, this tucked-away venue is where millionaire railroad executive John W. Campbell one had an office in Grand Central. He died in 1957, and it was turned into a signalman’s office, before becoming an MTA Police office, where officers stored guns. It also held a stint as a small jail. Suffice it to say, the space has a past. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, building was restored, costing almost $2 million. Today, the Campbell remains a destination for jazz and cocktails, and, if you must, a snack or two."
