La Morgan Library & Museum : Bibliothèque, Musée et Centre Culturel à Manhattan
La Morgan Library & Museum est un centre culturel situé dans le quartier de Murray Hill à Manhattan. Autrefois bibliothèque personnelle du financier Pierpont Morgan, elle abrite aujourd'hui des manuscrits, des livres anciens, des peintures et des objets rares. La bibliothèque renferme notamment trois bibles de Gutenberg, des partitions originales de Mozart et le premier exemplaire du Petit Prince d'Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Le musée est ouvert du mardi au dimanche, avec des horaires prolongés le vendredi soir. L'entrée est gratuite le vendredi de 19h à 21h, avec une performance de jazz en direct. Les créneaux gratuits sont très prisés, il est donc recommandé de réserver une semaine à l'avance. Les autres jours, l'entrée coûte 22 $ pour les adultes et est gratuite pour les enfants de moins de 12 ans. "A la fois un musée et une bibliothèque de recherche, ce très beau bâtiment de style Renaissance italienne, entièrement rénové en 2006, a été construit par le grand financier J.-P. Morgan en 1906 et abrite une exceptionnelle collection de manuscrits et d'ouvrages rares. Constitué à l'origine uniquement de la collection de J.-P. Morgan, le musée s'est enrichi de dessins, d'impressions et d'autres manuscrits littéraires et musicaux. Il est possible d'y voir, au fil des différentes expositions temporaires, des originaux de Beethoven ou de Schubert, des lettres de Mozart ou de George Washington, des trésors d'enluminures et des éditions illustrées du Moyen Age et de la Renaissance. Deux pièces sont notamment remarquables : The West Room, qui était le bureau d'études de Morgan et qui a été conservé intact avec un beau plafond incurvé et quelques toiles de maîtres"

"In its day, the crimson-red study at the Morgan Library was considered among the most beautiful rooms in the world. Maybe it still is. Built by banker and financier John Pierpont Morgan, this environment makes it easy to imagine the passionate collector sitting at the leather-topped desk, puffing his cigar, and a robust fire crackling away. And while most people come here for the towering library, with its astounding collection of texts, this smaller red-walled room is a true delight. It feels like the most personal space, reflecting J.P. Morgan's love of art and beauty. Built in 1906 by McKim, Meade & White, the library's original concept was not to look forward, but to glance back. Morgan was enamored with the Renaissance, and he indulged that passion with great style. The ruby damask wall coverings bear the Chigi coat of arms, with its mountain and star motifs. The original silk came from an Italian palace, but pollution took its toll, and the present covering was replicated by Scalamandré. It is perfectly sumptuous. Now look up. The antique wooden ceiling was purchased in Florence and reassembled to fit this room. And all around are stained-glass panels set into the windows, dating from the 15th to 17th centuries. Every detail was tended to, even at the writing desk, where Morgan's initials are artfully tooled into the leather-top design. This is where Morgan met with art dealers, financiers, and colleagues. Surely this ravishing room cast a spell on all who entered. But the most famous meeting happened here during the 1907 financial crisis, when Morgan literally locked bankers in this suite, while he played solitaire nearby. He forced them to find a solution. They eventually did, pledging their own personal funds to save the banks. No doubt this lavish room captured their hearts - and their wallets."
