"In a neighborhood with plenty of Italian restaurants, Ospi stands out for two major reasons: its creative takes on Southern Italian cuisine and the hospitality team led by chef Jackson Kalb and his managing partner Melissa Saka (also of Jame Enoteca), who can make any meal at this upscale-casual eatery feel like white tablecloth fine dining. Although its toasts courtesy of Clark Street Bakery and thin crust pizzas may win over most carb lovers, Kalb’s excellent housemade rigatoni with vodka sauce and buttery chicken parm are what set its menu apart from the rest of the pack."

"food at Jackson Kalb and Melissa Saka’s Italian restaurant is straightforwardly delicious and fun. I note the fun because when you order the crispy provolone — you must order the crispy provolone — the cheese pull it prompts will encourage gasps, bouts of laughter, many photos and most likely an Instagram video. The cheese oozes out of its crisp shell. You dunk the giant-much-better-version-of-a-mozzarella-stick into a ramekin of vodka sauce, and your evening is off to a promising start. The pastas are made in-house and excellent, unsurprising for Kalb, who made a name for himself serving pasta at Jame Enoteca in El Segundo. The raschiatelli, shaped like split snap peas and coated in a spicy pork sparerib ragù, is a standout. The butter chicken ordered Parm style (under a blanket of melted cheese with vodka sauce), is another dish that will have everyone at the table pulling out their phones. It is a superb take on chicken Parm with a cutlet of chicken breaded and fried in butter. The restaurant’s location, on a corner near the Venice boardwalk, offers ample people-watching"

"Venice’s Ospi does things a little differently with their chicken parmesan. First, it’s not really on the menu—you have to order their butter chicken “parm-style” for an extra five bucks. Second, there’s no marinara sauce involved; instead, you’ll find a heaping amount of their excellent spicy vodka sauce over their chicken cutlet, which is pan-fried with butter and lemon. The dish is showered with parmesan cheese, and fresh purple and green basil that give it an herbaceous punch. We don’t usually like when people f*ck with perfection, but this new take on a classic is a major exception. Chef Jackson Kalb is intent on establishing himself as a Westside pasta impresario. The longtime owner of Jame Enoteca in El Segundo, along with partner Melissa Saka, is now ready to launch his second restaurant right on the main drag in Venice, called Ospi. The long-anticipated restaurant was scheduled to open for service in March or April before the pandemic struck, forcing Kalb and Saka to shift gears heavily in the intervening months. Now the duo is ready to serve, with first orders rolling out tonight. Much like Kalb’s other restaurant in the South Bay, Ospi will focus on Italian flavors, though this one comes with a more straightforward southern peninsula bent. That means housemade pasta with a “softer, silkier” feel as well as a hyper-thin pizza style that acts as a nod to the Roman restaurant Antico Forno Roscioli. Meatballs, tuna conserva, and the like round out the starter options, and dishes like crispy branzino, butter chicken, and pork secreto act as mains after the pasta and pizza courses. Cocktails and wines by the glass run in the $14 range. As for the space, the former 20-year-old Canal Club at 2025 Pacific Avenue has been completely overhauled with lots of light blonde wood, long communal tables for use in a post-pandemic world, a dark stone bar, and glassed-in pasta-preparation station off to the side of the dining room. This isn’t the Evan Funke climatized pasta box from nearby Felix, but it’s clear that handmade noodles will be a showcase. Ospi opens for service tonight, with al fresco dining for 40 as well as takeout and delivery via GrubHub and DoorDash. Expect hours from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week, plus a 20% starter discount for on-site dining for the first week (however, they won't be serving no alcohol)."
