"Tell anyone in the LA area that you’re eating in Santa Monica and they’ll be like, “Please bring me a Godmother.” And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that they’re not asking you for a new family member, they’re asking you for Bay Cities’ most famous sandwich: a stack of meats (prosciutto, ham, salami, mortadella, and capicola), cheeses, and peppers on delightfully crackly bread. This family-run Italian deli makes plenty of good sandwiches besides The Godmother, too—like their chicken parm sub and a standard turkey option—but if we're picking one, it's going to be the meatball."

"Italian grocery and deli. The person who recommended this to me told me to get the grandma or the spicy grandma"

"The Godmother at Bay Cities is one of those dishes that you have to try before you can really call yourself an Angeleno. Piled high with salami, mortadella, prosciutto, coppa, ham, provolone cheese, mild or spicy peppers and served on freshly baked, housemade bread, it’s a sandwich that draws lines almost every hour of the day. There is a shortcut, though, and you can take it by ordering from Bay Cities’ website and picking up your colossal sandwich instead. Inside, a gourmet market offers Italian specialty foods, like fresh pasta, olive oil and cheeses. But really, you’re going to come here and not get a sandwich? Fuggeddaboudit."

"Meatball Sub (8.5) - Extremely crowded, messy to eat, tastes pretty good. For meatball sub, go to the counter nearest the door serving hot food and order it, you don’t need to grab a slip and wait for your number to be called."

Not the opener of a joke, but an average day at Bay Cities, the Santa Monica landmark that’s the home of super-sandwiches such as The Godmother (spicy salami, prosciutto, mortadella, capicola and provolone) and a meatball sub that will spoil you for any other, all served on pillowy Italian bread (they keep bins of it at the checkout counters, so you can grab extra on your way out). You will also find Italian delicacies, in particular cheeses, not readily available elsewhere in LA. Maria Shollenbarger baycitiesitaliandeli.com"

"Bay Cities’ most famous sandwich, a stack of meats (prosciutto, ham, salami, mortadella, and capocollo), cheeses, and peppers on crunchy bread"

"The Godmother is their most famous sandwich filled with prosciutto, ham, capicola, mortadella, genoa salami, and provolone cheese. Our undeniable favorite though is the Little Don Lorenzo, which has prosciutto di parma, water mozzarella, roasted tomatoes, fresh basil, olive oil, oregano and black pepper on a mini baguette. Cash or debit only  If you're at this Santa Monica shop and for some reason not ordering The Godmother, we urge you to try Bay Cities' hot meatball sandwich with a few thick slices of melted Provolone. The bare-bones, billiard ball-sized, tightly packed meatballs are flecked with fennel seeds, dipped in tomato sauce and piled into the golden crusted house-baked bread. It's an over-the-top, messy affair that tells the world that you aren't afraid of a really rich, meaty meal. 1517 Lincoln Blvd., Santa Monica; (310) 395-8279. There isn’t a sandwich more synonymous with the city of Los Angeles than The Godmother at Bay Cities. And for good reason - it’s incredible. Prosciutto, ham, capicola, mortadella, salami, and provolone all stacked between crunchy Italian bread and topped with “the works” - a heaping pile of mild and spicy peppers. That said, whether it’s a caprese or a turkey pastrami, this Italian deli is loaded with excellent sandwiches, and you need to try all of them. Tip: Bay Cities is always busy, so if you want to skip the line, be sure to call-in your order and head right to the counter. The Godmother is still the undefeated heavyweight champion of Italian subs in Los Angeles. Fans say it’s the crackly Dutch Crunch-ish bread called filone, baked on-site, that makes it so good. Others lobby for the quality of salami, mortadella, ham, prosciutto and capicola, all made locally and layered neatly on the bottom slice of bread. Maybe you find the way the mayonnaise, yellow mustard and Italian dressing smush together with the Chicago-style hot peppers and shredded iceberg lettuce to form a sizable layer of heavily dressed salad irresistible. It’s the combination of everything that’s hard to beat. The sandwich is more than worth the demolition-derby-style parking lot and the long lines that snake in front of the deli counter at almost all hours of the day. A couple pro tips to consider: The hot peppers are far superior to the mild. If you want to skip the line, look for the baskets full of pre-made Godmothers that sit on top of the deli case during busy hours. And grab a couple of the 10-cent containers of Italian dressing for a little extra zing on each bite "

"Delicious sandwiches. Godmother. Pastrami. Torres chips!"

@michaelfl

" Arguably the most iconic sandwich in Los Angeles, the Godmother is a classic Italian deli sandwich filled with Boar’s Head deli meats, cheese, mustard, and veggies, all contained in a house-baked bread roll. There are probably better sandwiches at Bay Cities, especially the hot sandwiches, but the Godmother is what everyone talks about, and a must-try at some point in every Angeleno’s life."
