Rustic Canyon Wine Bar and Seasonal Kitchen
Rustic Canyon Wine Bar and Seasonal Kitchen à Santa Monica

"#32 A room of mixed woods envelops you in its bustling din and butterscotch lighting. Mezcal sours are sipped alongside almonds distantly perfumed with lavender and generous, taut slices of coppa. Beaming servers wear bespoke aprons. Calling-card dishes (yielding pozole in salsa verde with mussels; a “beets and berries” salad enriched with avocado, pistachios and quinoa; polenta cake) mingle among seasonal surprises such as chanterelle toast with fennel butter and mango. Sounds like a quintessential Southern California restaurant, right? That’s Rustic Canyon. The kitchen, run by executive chef Andy Doubrava, must surely house a teleportation machine that sends the Santa Monica farmers market’s finest hauls straight to the restaurant. Sommelier Ferdinando Mucerino honors Rustic Canyon’s roots as a wine bar: Look for a $30 bottle of Grecian sparkling wine, a feisty Oregonian white called the Assassination of Chardonnay and pinot noirs from at least three continents in every imaginable price tier. Full bar. Valet parking. Credit cards accepted."

"Founder Josh Loeb opened this intimate Santa Monica favourite in 2006 and it’s garnered critical acclaim for its hyper-seasonal food in the years since. Understated in style with exposed wood tables, Rustic Canyon is a low-key neighbourhood restaurant serving innovative California cuisine that draws upon a compelling Californian larder and impressive wine list. A nuanced rotation of vegetables sees dishes labelled using produce names – think Coleman’s lettuce, Rising C Ranch yuzu, Oregon chanterelles – as well as freshly landed seafood, homemade charcuterie and local meat and dairy. This ethos also extends to its cocktail menu, where seasonal cocktails include the “speak friend” – a potent yet balanced libation combining tequila, melon, aperol, pamplemousse, lime juice and sea salt."

"Rustic Canyon has been doing farm-to-table dining (without the pretension or white tablecloths) since before it was cliche. Like every other seasonal spot, their menu changes all the time, so go ahead and embrace eating those vegetables you can only find for one week of the year. Your parents, out-of-towners you’re trying to impress, and early-in-the-game dates will all love it here. Is there anything Jeremy Fox can’t do? Since 2006—long before farm-to-table menus became fine dining de rigueur in L.A.—Rustic Canyon has been serving the best locally sourced meat and produce to tourists and neighborhood regulars alike. Grass-fed short rib is served with broccoli and a sprinkling of curried macadamia nuts. On the starter menu, there’s an amberjack crudo brightened with dragonfruit and cilantro, and a time-tested Baja sea bass freshened up with carrot escabeche. No matter what you order, Rustic Canyon's dishes are fresh, comforting and comfortable—there's not a lot of pomp and circumstance in these plates, though the flavor's always there (vegetable or no)."
