The rooms all share the hotel’s minimalist style, as does the impressive restaurant, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping stone terrace. And to top it all off? The spa. Soak in the infinity pool, wind down with a spot of yoga, or indulge in traditional Bhutanese treatments that draw on the healing power of over 100 natural herbs. Bhutan is famously high-altitude, so it’s wise to take the first few days slowly. When you’ve adjusted, go for magical hikes in Neyphu Valley. Then let the staff point you towards some of the area’s many (and spectacular) Buddhist monasteries, like Tiger's Nest, a sacred site perched on the cliffside of the upper Paro valley."

"5* | From $pn The vision of Dutch hotelier Louk Lennaert, this independent hotel was built from the ground up to look like a traditional fortress. It combines cultural immersion with an all-inclusive approach to wellness—which means spa treatments are part of the price. What can we expect in our room? All 24 are enormous, with lots of natural light and views of the valley as well as Eutok Samdrupcholing Monastery. Fittingly minimalist in design, they are decorated with neutral tones and local tapestries. Beds are positioned so feet do not face the monastery, which is considered disrespectful. Those on the upper floor have a balcony; the ones on the ground a garden terrace—ideal for morning coffee and reading the copy of The Restful Mind left in the room. Organic bathroom toiletries are handmade by a local artisan and guests can choose from a selection of scents. _How about the food and drink? The set menu is a tad too European-centric, but the Bhutanese chef has plans for guests to be able to customize meals during their stay. The hotel’s aim is to be entirely organic by 2020, both growing fruit and vegetables and sourcing produce locally. The most memorable dish is the typical momo dumplings, washed down with Bhutanese whiskey or craft beer."
