"Travel writing about Bhutan has long focused on the mandatory $100 daily fee for most tourists. In fact, in years past, the country required all visitors to travel through an accredited all-inclusive tour operator. While those rules have been relaxed in the major cities, tourists still require licensed guides to reach places like the setting of Gangtey Lodge: a pristine space above Phobjikha Valley, overlooking densely forested Himalayan mountains and rolling farmland, under a monastery where legend says each wave of black-necked cranes circles three times on their migration from Tibet. Guests are welcomed with a traditional song performed by the entire staff, before spending days soaking in traditional Bhutanese wooden baths — heated by fire-roasted river rocks and dappled with herbs — or joining in on morning prayer at the nearby Buddhist college. Private meditation is sometimes arranged with the lama of Gangtey Monastery. An experience, it should be noted, that is never guaranteed."
