"Le steak de chez Gage & Tollner Miroirs anciens, bois de merisier et lustres en laiton occupent toute la longueur de ce restaurant historique ouvert en 1892. Le choix ne manque pas, l’équipe, menée par le chef cuisinier Adam Shepard, n’est pas de celles qui laissent l’histoire et le décor prendre le pas sur le contenu de l’assiette ! Le mot de l’inspecteur : « Les tours de fruits de mer, les steaks XXL, les galettes de crabe et le superbe plateau de poulet frit accompagné de beignets à la farine de maïs s’inspirent d'Edna Lewis qui dirigea la cuisine à la fin des années 1980 et dont les spécialités du Sud américain ont fait de nombreux adeptes. »"

"The team at Gage & Tollner does a delicate dance. The original iteration of this historic Brooklyn steakhouse wasn’t exactly hot and new—it first opened in 1879. But when the dining room reopened to diners in 2021 with a new set of partners and a fresh menu, it found a balance between the ages. There are plenty of steakhouse classics for the wedge salad and bone-in steak lovers. But even the most recognizable steakhouse dishes have been reapproached and made fresh by the touch of chef-partner Sohui Kim and executive chef Adam Shepard. The Clams Kimsino are drenched in kimchi butter, there’s a welcome sweetness from pear and date in the beef tartare, and months later we’re still dreaming about the restaurant’s supernaturally smooth creamed spinach. All the desserts made by pastry chef Caroline Schiff are delightful, but you’d be particularly remiss to leave without a taste and a photo of the towering Baked Alaska For Two. What to order: Crispy Hen-Of-The-Woods Mushrooms ($18); Creamed Spinach ($14); French Fries ($10); Bone-in Ribeye ($4.55 per oz.); Baked Alaska for Two ($26)."

"Sunken Harbor Club sits a staircase above the latest iteration of Gage and Tollner, a Downtown Brooklyn restaurant that originally opened in 1892. That restaurant remains an official New York City landmark and still very much looks like somewhere you'd eat steak with a 19th-century industrialist—but sister establishment Sunken Harbor is, for some reason, a tiki bar. Don't question it. The pirate ship theme doesn't really mesh with what's going on downstairs, but it sure feels nice drinking a single-malt old fashioned in a dark, wood-paneled room with ropes and buoys hanging from the ceiling. Try this place for a casual $20 drink the next time you want to hide somewhere dim—and come on the earlier side to guarantee yourself a seat."
