"St Hedwig's Cathedral 1773 Bebelplatz Johann Baumann This is a symbolic structure of tolerance: with the construction of St.-HedwigsKathedrale, Friedrich II erected the first Roman Catholic church in Protestant Brandenburg. Situated on the prominent Forum Fridericianum (no. 32), it was the second building to be completed, after the Staatsoper (no. 27). Friedrich II provided his own sketches of ideas, modelled along the lines of the Roman Pantheon. The reliefs in the frieze and between the portal columns were added at the end of the 19th century. The church was gutted by fire in 1943. In the reconstruction of 1952, Hans Schwippert replaced the original dome with one made from reinforced concrete, plainer and somewhat lower than the original. The entrance to the crypt was widened with a stairway. The interior is modern in style; the colossal columns were retained, but without the original Corinthian capital. Today, the building is a cathedral of the diocese of Berlin."
