"artifacts & explanatory plaques telling the story of what was once one of the world’s largest slums — ironically now one of the most pleasant corners of hong kong - History - https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/kowloon-walled-city - Locals called it Hak Nam - the City of Darkness - Can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) where a military outpost was set up to mange the salt trade, then not rlly used for hundreds of years - In 1843, after ceding Hong Kong to Brits, built the walls, and used to as a military space to protect from further Brit intervention w barracks for 150 soldiers —> 1860 - a new treaty granted the whole of the Kowloon Penninsula to Britain, except the walled city - Occasionally Hong Kong would try to evict everyone and turn it into a park, but the Chinese Government always resisted - WWII - Japanese forces occupied the Kowloon Penninsula and tore down the city walls to build an airplane runway - Post WWII - refugees flooded —> no one wanted to go outside the borders and lose the protection of the British government - Brits kept tryna evict, refugees kept returning and Chinese government would intervene —> riots in 1948 —> Hong Kong gov. Settled on a policy of no intervention - no tax, no regulation of business, no health or planning systems, no police presence - 5 triad gangs — the King Yee, Sun Yee On, 14K, Wo Shing Wo, and Tai Ho Choi - Ironic bc the city that had been founded to police the traffic of opium became the epicentre of Hong Kong’s narcotic trade - Factories could flourish w conditions often appalling but productivity and profit remarkable - No requirements for building —> very tall buildings put up very fast presumably very precarious —> high-rises would often lean against each other w residents calling them “lovers’ buildings” - The most densely populated city on earth - A hundredth of a square mile in size yet 350 buildings occupied by 8,500 premises, 10,700 households, and 33,000+ residents - The many tall narrow blocks were packed so tight it appeared like one massive structure - Entering the city meant leaving daylight behind - Hundreds of factories, unliscensed doctors and dentists - many ppl came from outside of the city to pay lower fees and ask no questions in return - Dog and snake meat were specialties of the city - Anarchist, self-regulated city"
