"4* | 107 rooms, from $300pn CHARMING, CREATIVES' FAVOURITE Built in 1900, this nine-storey charmer must have been determined to have creatives rest their heads here near the start of Fifth Avenue, a block north of Washington Square Park. It's a world away from its last life as a New School dorm, but the Marlton still manages low-key cool. The rooms are small, but who cares? They're perfectly formed: delicate mouldings and intimate dimensions lend an air of residential Paris, accessorized by Sean MacPherson's penchant for Persian rugs, faux-fur throws and vintage yet modern bathrooms. It's more about hanging out in the lobby lounge or on a sofa by the drawing-room fire anyway, or if you're feeling hungry or convivial, there's the ever-popular brasserie, MARGAUX. Today it's a favourite with the music and fashion establishment, but as affordable lodgings back in the day, the property hosted many a struggling artist. Julie Andrews and Mickey Rourke are among the actors that stayed here and Jack Kerouac wrote The Subterraneans and Tristessa while living here. It feels right that service is warm and friendly, but unashamedly pared back. At a time when much of Manhattan is in danger of feeling too polished, preened and pricey, full marks 80 to Sean MacPherson for preserving Marlton House's bohemian spirit."
