"With our daily deluge of social media photos, its nice to know the fine art of drawing by hand is alive and well. The Society of Illustrators on the Upper East Side, housed in a stately townhouse on a tawny street, is a hidden temple of illustration. An old boys' club when it opened in 1901, the society was where distinguished illustrators gathered to dine, draw, and discuss. It's very modern now and open to everyone. "People do not realize what incredible art they are going to see throughout the building, even in the bathrooms," says executive director Anelle Miller. On some evenings you'll see a cache of people sitting around a makeshift stage while nude or curiously costumed models hold long poses. Welcome to the beloved Sketch Night, where amateurs and professionals sit side by side, drawing from life. Sultry jazz music inspires. Cocktails refresh. Now that's what you call a fine evening. Don't miss the second-foor staircase, where you'll see dozens of portrait sketches of past presidents. Finely detailed or spare and sim-ple, they are a sampling of sketching styles over the years. In the Hall of Fame Dining Room on the third floor is the Society's welcoming bar. With floor-to-ceiling windows, it's one of the city's best-kept secrets. Above the bar hangs Norman Rockwell's colorful painting, The Dover Coach, which he gifted to the Society in 1939. The Society hosts rotating exhibitions of the graphic arts, from Spider Man to fashion illustration, cartoons to computer-generated imagery. You forget how varied and entertaining illustrations can be. They are a bit easier to digest than thickly layered oil paintings. The hand-drawn image feels immediate, a direct connection to the artist. Ponder that idea over a lunch in the Society's retro-feeling 128 Bar & Bistro. With its brick walls and charming terrace, it's the quintessential Upper East Side haunt."
