"UNESCO World Heritage The historic center of Peru's capital city, founded by Spain in 1535, is second to none in South America. Prominent among its religious monuments are the Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, and the Churches and Convents of Santo Domingo and San Francisco. Now the headquarters of the Museum of Religious Art, the Church and Convent of San Francisco were rebuilt from 1657 to 1674 in the Spanish Baroque style following a disastrous earthquake in the previous year. The site, which had been selected in 1535 by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro himself, is on the bank of the River Rimac; it is the largest area to be occupied by a convent in the New World. Within the complex are the Church of San Francisco, the convent, two small chapels named La Soledad (the Solitude) and El Milagro (the Miracle), and outbuildings. A plaza and secluded communal patios and cloisters integrate the complex; beautiful tiles brought from Seville embellish the cloister walls. Underfoot, an extensive network of catacombs connects the complex to other buildings, including' Lima Cathedral. In the catacombs are the skulls and bones of Christians, some of them arranged in neat, if somewhat macabre, wheel-like patterns. That the rebuilt seventeenth-century complex has survived subsequent earthquakes is thanks to the Portuguese architect appointed to the task, Constantino de Vasconcellos. He used solid pillars to support barrel vaults, and built with wood and quincha, a lightweight blend of rushes, mud, and plaster. The only stone elements are the lavishly decorated altarpiece portal and the lateral portal. The church is a treasure-house of sculpture, carving, furniture, and gold and silver artifacts, paid for by donations from the Spanish gold and silver mines. There is a fine collection of Spanish, Flemish, and Peruvian paintings, and a 25,000-volume library."

"Cette église est la plus belle de Lima et son parvis, envahi de pigeons, lui donne un faux air de Venise. Sa façade de pierre taillée vaut le déplacement. A droite en entrant, un fantastique retable éclipse par ses ors l'autel central. Les chaises du choeur sont taillées dans le cèdre du Nicaragua ; colonnes et voûte sont ornées de reliefs en plâtre. La bibliothèque abrite quelque 25 000 volumes. Les catacombes, découvertes en 1951, hébergent les ossements de près de 70 000 défunts."
