EN “This is my last address on this earth”, wrote Sigmund Freud in 1938, when he moved to this cottage in north London after the annexation of Vienna by the Nazis. He lived here until his death a year later, surrounded by his medicine and archaeology books, his annotated Goethes and Shakespeares, and his collection of Egyptian and Chinese antiquities. His daughter Anna, who succeeded him, has left everything as it is, including Lucian Freud’s famous sofa and pastels. Psychiatrists and patientspass by each other on the stairs, all with the same devoted expression for the master. The scent of his favourite cigars has long gone, but his spirit still remains."
