"The Glacier Express is Switzerland’s classic panoramic train between Zermatt and St. Moritz. It is marketed as the “slowest express train in the world” because the full route takes about 8 hours, but the point is the scenery, not speed. The official route is Zermatt ↔ St. Moritz, with major stops/segments around Brig, Andermatt, Oberalp Pass, Disentis, Chur, Filisur, Samedan, and St. Moritz. Why it’s famous This is the big Swiss alpine rail experience: panoramic windows, table seating, mountains, deep valleys, stone villages, bridges, tunnels, the Rhine Gorge, and the high crossing over Oberalp Pass. It is more polished and tourist-oriented than the Centovalli Railway, but also more dramatic and iconic. Best route The classic full ride is: Zermatt → Brig → Andermatt → Oberalp Pass → Chur → Filisur → St. Moritz or the reverse: St. Moritz → Zermatt I would pick the direction based on your trip flow: Coming from Italy / Milan / Lake Como: Go St. Moritz → Zermatt, or connect via Tirano/Bernina Express first. Coming from Geneva / Lausanne / Montreux: Go Zermatt → St. Moritz. Doing a bigger scenic rail trip: Pair Glacier Express + Bernina Express. That gives you the two most famous Swiss panoramic rail routes, and the Bernina side gets you toward Tirano, Italy. Seating and ticket basics You need two things to ride the Glacier Express: 1. A valid train ticket or rail pass 2. A mandatory seat reservation The official Glacier Express site states that 1st and 2nd class seat reservations are available 93 days before travel, while Excellence Class reservations open earlier for the season. Classes 2nd Class Best value. You still get panoramic windows and the same scenery. 1st Class More room, fewer seats across, more comfortable for an all-day scenic ride. Excellence Class Luxury version with premium service and food. It requires a valid 1st-class ticket plus a mandatory CHF 540 seat reservation. For most travelers, I’d choose 1st Class if the budget allows. For value, 2nd Class is perfectly fine because the view is the same. Best time to ride Best overall: late June through September for green valleys, open mountain scenery, and easier travel logistics. Most dramatic: winter, especially with snow, but weather can be more variable. Beautiful shoulder season: late September/early October, especially if pairing with Engadin or alpine fall color. Glacier Express vs. Centovalli Railway Train Best for Feel Glacier Express Big Swiss Alps bucket-list ride Polished, panoramic, all-day Centovalli Railway Short scenic Switzerland–Italy connector Charming, local, intimate Bernina Express Switzerland-to-Italy alpine drama High-mountain, UNESCO-style scenery My recommendation If this is your first big Swiss scenic train, do the Glacier Express. I’d build it as a 2-night minimum experience: Night 1: Zermatt See the Matterhorn area. Day 2: Glacier Express to St. Moritz Make the full panoramic crossing. Night 2: St. Moritz / Pontresina Stay in the Engadin, then continue toward Tirano / Milan using the Bernina route. For a truly great Switzerland-to-Italy rail itinerary, I’d do: Zermatt → Glacier Express → St. Moritz/Pontresina → Bernina Express route → Tirano → Lake Como or Milan."
