"Dates from 1520 The oldest riverside pub in London offers lovely views of the Thames – we’re sure that’s what used to draw the sailors and smugglers to the pub once known as ‘The Devil’s Tavern’. It’s been standing since 1520, and a reminder of its dark past can be seen with the noose and gallows that hang off of the balcony."

"Riverfront pub and site of riverfront executions. Great view, fun atmosphere. Stick to the beer as it is Greene King owned. Captain Kidd was hung here - hence the noose hanging over the riverside."

"Prospect of Whitby est considéré comme le plus ancien pub de Londres, même si cela est difficile à prouver aujourd’hui. Toujours est-il que de nombreux personnages, parfois sinistres, ont participé à son histoire mouvementée. Désormais, les gens s’y arrêtent pour profiter de la vue exceptionnelle sur la Tamise, ou pour sa sélection grandiose de bières locales. Je vous recommande d’ailleurs la Cask Ale à la pression."

"Many may argue this claim to fame but according to the Guinness Book of World Records, Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is the oldest pub in the UK, dating back to the 8th century. However, the oldest pub in London is ...drum roll...The Prospect of Whitby was established in 1520. That title could be argued depending on the criteria. Is it the oldest running pub with doors that never closed for business? The oldest building? The oldest license to sell liquor on the premises? The oldest pub next to the River Thames? I've found pubs in London that were established long before 1520, but they were opened under a different name. Any way you choose, London is not short on pedigree pubs. This famous pub is rich in history. The infamous Hanging Judge Jeffries was a local and a regular patron. It’s said that he would enjoy lunch on the balcony while watching hangings on the Execution Dock, where Captain Kidd met his fate in 1701. Originally named The Pelican, this famous pub was known to attract smugglers, thieves, and pirates, thus making the area a dangerous place to live. The interior is authentic and quaint with a good selection of wines and food. Sitting on the Thames-side terrace, the setting was picturesque, with a weeping willow tree for shade, and a hangman’s noose dangling in the wind. "

"« (…)At the same time, however, 'The Devil's Tavern' was not just a place for murderers and criminals. It also claims to have served some more reputable clients. Samuel Pepys, Charles Dickens, James Whistler and J.M.W Turner have all reportedly enjoyed beverages within its walls. » Historical pub."

"One of the most delightfully historical pubs in London, the Prospect of Whitby was constructed in 1520 and has been serving drinks ever since. It is supposed to be the oldest riverside Tavern in London and was traditionally associated with smugglers, pirates, cut-throats, and sailors. And it is so close to the river's edge, they have to seal off the lower outdoor terrace whenever it becomes high tide. Just to the right of the pub, the Pelican stairs lead down to the river. "

"Oldest pub on river Thames. "
@robert61
"London's oldest riverside pub dating back to 1520, with its original flagstone floor and a rare pewter-topped bar, as well as old barrels and ships masts built into the structure. Spectacular views over the River Thames, including from the beer garden and first floor balcony and terrace. The pub used to be a notorious haunt for smugglers, thieves and pirates, as well as Charles Dickens, Samuel Pepys, and in more recent history during the 1960's with celebrities and royalty including Kirk Douglas, Paul Newman, Princess Margaret and Prince Rainier. It also features briefly in an episode of Only Fools And Horses when Uncle Albert goes missing."
