This was the most amazing hotel I have ever stayed at in my life. The staff were so nice and helpful, and the service provided from check-in to check-out are going to be missed until I get a chance to stay at another Hoshinoya location in the future. This 17-floor high-rise is one of both worlds: a traditional ryokan inn, but rendered in a contemporary style, and aptly located between the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station. Upon entering, you immediately feel the frenetic streets trickle away as you slip off your shoes. Staff in kimono tuck each pair into bamboo and chestnut cubbies lining the long and tall entryway, and guests walk barefoot into an almost achingly detailed interior, where tradition slips into every nook and along every edge of the property, whether it's tatami mats lining the elevator floors or an audibly hushed state of mind. What’s the crowd like? Wait—are there other guests? While the hotel brings communal spaces into the fold, the type of guests staying here all seem to appreciate the sounds of solitude and privacy. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. There are more than 84 guest rooms, but each floor is custom-fit like an independent six-room ryokan. Yuri rooms unfold in the corner, all squared off with uncommonly soft tatami mats. Large windows slip shut with shoji paper screens which, once opened, filter patterned light through the facade's patent armor: A metallic framework of the Edo Komon motif. Japanese craftsmanship finesses throughout the room with ease, whether it's drawers and wardrobes embracing a bamboo weave or a loveseat poised on the floor with its arms and back made from loops of flexed bamboo. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us? Tradition bends for comfort when it comes to the bed, which, unlike the typical futon, are plush mattresses just slightly raised so as not to break with the traditional futon look. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? The yukata here are softer and more casual than custom, and guests are encouraged to wear them throughout the premises—if we could, we'd wear them straight out of the hotel for the plane ride home. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. Bathrooms are separated by glass which frosts in a snap by pushing a button, while the design is filled with right angles with rounded corners. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? The complimentary Wi-Fi is as fast as the TVs are flat (for the record, TVs are invisibly embedded in mirrors). Room service: Worth it? Room service is part of the ryokan experience, and the dishes are all elegant, whether it's a bento box or Japanese curry or a fine steak. Each floor, however, includes a communal lounge where guests can gather for living-room-service, where attendants deliver items like onigiri and roasted green tea (instant ramen, thank goodness, is supplied after hours). Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. The entire reason to visit is to bathe in the open-air onsen, truthfully the first of its kind in this stretch of Tokyo. These rooftop hot-springs, enriched with natural minerals, pool beneath the starry sky like nowhere else, let alone elsewhere in town. Bottom line: worth it, and why? If you're looking for a hotel, this might not be exactly what you had in mind—but let the change of pace soak in, and it will change your whole perspective on hospitality."
