"UNESCO World Heritage In the years after its inauguration in 1737, the Teatro di San Carlo was Europe's most important center of opera. Many of Europe's greatest composers have had their works performed here, and it remains one of the finest opera houses in the world. The Teatro di San Carlo was built to replace the dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo, which dated from the early seventeenth century. The new opera house was commissioned by the king of Naples, Charles III Bourbon. It was intended to be as much an expression of Bourbon wealth and prestige as an opera house with original decoration in gold, with blue upholstery- the colors of the Bourbon family. The theater was inaugurated on November 4, 1737, with a performance of Domenico Sarro's opera Achille in Sciro. The theater seated an audience of 3,300, making it the largest opera house in the world at the time. On February 2, 1816, the Teatro di San Carlo was destroyed by fire, but it was rebuilt within ten months on the order of King Ferdinand I. The current red and gold interior color scheme was fitted in 1854, but otherwise the theater's basic structure went unchanged. After suffering heavy bomb damage during World War II, the theater was repaired by Allied forces and reopened within six months. Many prominent composers are associated with the Teatro di San Carlo, including Gioacchino Rossini, who was the theater's composer in residence between 1815 and 1822. Giuseppe Verdi wrote three operas for the Teatro di San Carlo, and many of Giacomo Puccini's operas were staged there. The Teatro di San Carlo remains a working opera house, allowing modern listeners to experience the glory days of Neapolitan opera. The building has weathered disaster and war and retained its beauty, remaining an important center of opera."
