"Most visitors to Arashiyama are so enamoured with the swaying stalks of the famous Bamboo Forest that they overlook this stunning estate that sits at the western end of the grove. While the admission fee of ¥1000 might seem a bit hefty, it’s certainly worth it and keep in mind that the price includes a bowl of matcha (green powdered tea) and a sweet. The estate is the former villa and gardens of Ōkōchi Denjirō, a famous actor in the 1920s known for his jidaigeki films, silent movie period dramas depicting the lives of samurais. The immaculate and carefully preserved gardens sprawl out over the property and up the slope of Ogura-san, from where there are extraordinary views over the city with the mountains on one side and the Hozugawa on the other. Take your time exploring the trails through the garden, admiring the architecture of the villa and resting for a moment to contemplate the surrounding beauty and the sublime views. Afterwards, head to the delightful traditional teahouse with your ticket to enjoy that frothy bowl of matcha and Japanese sweet.
