"Here we are at Campo de Fiori, with the oldest daily market (since 1869). Every day the market gets build up in the morning, and at 15:00 it’s taken down and is transformed when all the restaurants put their tables and chairs in the middle and it’s a great spot for a drink. A lot of tourists come here but it is also a popular hangout for the locals. The market is nice, but keep in mind that it somewhat overpriced because of the tourism. Now maybe you have noticed, but this is the only square here in Rome without a church. Which is odd right, because there are more than 900 churches to be found in rome. Why is there no church here? Because this is the place were people were executed during the inquisition. And executions, you don’t perform them in front of the house of God. In memory of the people that were executed here and as a marter of the freedom of speech, the statue in the middle was built in 1889 rebelliously facing towards the Vatican. It represents “Giordano Bruno” philosopher and scientist. . He believed, just as Galileo Galilei, that the earth was not the center of the universe. But that the earth was actually one of the planets turning around the sun. He believed in the Heliocentric system. Now, the church did not like this idea. In this time the church even still thought the world was flat. Giordano Bruno Stood by his believes, and that’s why he was burned at the stake on this square on 17th of februari in 1600. When the Statue was emerged the pope did refuse to attend the ceremony and threatened to leave the city, but finally in the year 2000 the Church officially apologized for burning him at the stake."
