"Be sure you check out the park at the back before you leave. It's even prettier from behind."

"UNESCO World Heritage The Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris is situated on the ile de la Cité in the French capital. The Roman Catholic cathedral is France's leading place of Christian worship, and ceremonies such as funeral services for heads of state are held there. The cathedral is a landmark familiar all over the world, partly thanks to the 1831 novel by French author Victor Hugo, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Hugo wrote the story to raise awareness of the church, which at that time was in disrepair and threatened with demolition. He was successful, a campaign to save the cathedral ensued, and restoration works commenced in 1845. The cathedral's site was originally that of a Gallic Roman temple to the god Jupiter, and later Paris's first Christian church, Saint-Étienne Basilica. Work began in 1163 under the supervision of the Bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully, who had the old church torn down. Building was completed in 1345 and various amendments were made over the centuries. From its inception, the church was used by French royalty for religious services and to mark victory celebrations. Even after the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the revolutionaries had a Te Deum sung in the cathedral. However, by 1793 Notre-Dame's past associations were frowned upon; many of its statues and artworks were destroyed, religious artifacts were melted down, and the cathedral was used as a warehouse for food. Although Notre-Dame was reconsecrated as a church in 1801, when Napoleon was crowned emperor of the French at a ceremony held there in 1804, its state had become so shoddy that draperies were used to conceal its poor condition."
