"This unique wildlife observation facility in Apollo Beach features elevated viewing platforms and a boardwalk overlooking the warm-water discharge canal from the adjacent TECO power plant, where hundreds of manatees gather during cooler months seeking the artificially heated refuge. Opened in 1986 after manatees naturally discovered the power plant's outflow, the free admission center has become one of Florida's most reliable locations for observing wild manatees, with peak season (November through April) bringing congregations of 300 or more of these gentle giants. The site includes an educational visitor center with exhibits explaining manatee biology and conservation, while the outdoor observation areas provide remarkable close-up views of manatees surfacing, nursing their calves, and socializing in the clear canal waters. Beyond the manatees, the 50-acre preserve encompasses nature trails through native habitats where visitors can spot wading birds and other wildlife, making it both an exceptional window into marine mammal behavior and a testament to how industrial infrastructure can unexpectedly support endangered species."
