"Great service - even though they were busy. Barbacoa was tasty and the small plate was plenty big! Huevas rancheros was typical though meat in beans was extra ! Unique style potatoes. The concha was spot on delicious- flaky and moist - crusty sugar top. And the goose made flour tortillas 🤤🤤🤤"

"The very longtime Holly Mexican restaurant and bakery is magnificent, serving up classic dishes like barbacoa plates, carne guisada, pork chops, and wonderful tacos with fillings like crispy bacon and migas, for breakfast and lunch. It’s such an important restaurant in the fabric of Austin’s past, present, and future that it was recently recognized as one of the James Beard Foundation’s Classic Restaurants of the year. Takeout orders can be placed in person; phone orders can be placed on the weekends; and there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas."

"Joe’s no-frills charm is undeniable: Selena playing on the jukebox; Peptobismol-colored cakes on display in the bakery, and oversized red plastic cups dotting every table. Don’t expect fancy coffee or tacos with quirky names—just the straightforward Tex-Mex cuisine South Texas natives have grown up eating. Be sure to try the handmade flour tortillas (they’re thick, warm, and leave a bit of flour on your hands), the thick refried beans that are definitely not vegan, and Joe’s famously crispy bacon that’s dredged in flour before being fired on the flat-top grill. Oh, and then there’s the fiery salsa verde, brutal in the best way. These components add up to some of the most delicious Tex-Mex breakfast tacos in town. Trust. Must-try taco: Bacon, Egg, and Cheese This selection highlights the crispy, almost-battered bacon and tortillas that are so soft and fluffy they’d make a fine comforter for a tiny man. Add a pinch of salt, and don’t be shy with the salsa. How to order: Stop by for first come, first served seating or call 512-472-0017 for takeout."

"The historic Mexican bakery serves as a two-fold pillar to the East Austin community, founded in 1962 by Joe and Paula Avila, and now run by the next two generations of the family, spearheaded by Regina Estrada. First, there’s the quite exceptional daytime menu, from the wonderfully tender and juicy barbacoa breakfast to the migas to the lunchier tacos. Then there is its community service: Estrada is an advocate to and for East Austin, from making sure people are informed of what’s going on to straight-up registering people to vote. Curbside pickup orders can be placed over the phone."
