"4/24/22 Fresh from remodeling London's skyline with 30 St Mary Axe (the Gherkin), Norman Foster tackled the HQ of the Hearst media empire. The diamond-faceted facade of this 44-storey tower, completed in 2006, thrusts out of an existing art deco edifice that was commissioned in the 1920s by the newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst; the six-storey structure was always intended to form the base of a landmark high-rise. The new blends seamlessly with the old thanks to the dramatic lobby that extends up through the lower floors and provides access to the rest of the building. And it's not just a pretty sight. The tower is environmentally friendly too - it was constructed with 85 per cent recycled steel and consumes roughly 25 per cent less energy than its neighbours. 300 W 57th Street"

"W.-R. Hearst, qui rêvait sans doute de recréer Vienne à New York et de s'en proclamer l'empereur, voulait abriter son empire dans une forteresse. Son gratte-ciel, bâti en 1928 pour 2 millions de dollars, n'est jamais monté plus haut que cinq étages, à cause de la dépression de 1929, mais il témoigne des visions de Citizen Kane. Faute d'argent, seule la base du gratte-ciel a pu être construite à l'époque. Mais les rêves de grandeur de William Hearst (décédé en 1951) ont finalement été exaucés près de 80 ans plus tard, en 2006, lorsqu'un building fut construit sur le socle datant de 1928. La tour, qui s'élève à 182 mètres pour 46 étages, fut le premier gratte-ciel a être inauguré après les attentats du 11-Septembre. Le bâtiment a reçu en 2006 le prestigieux Emporis Skyscraper Award, qui récompense le plus beau gratte-ciel de l'année. L'architecture de l'immeuble est en effet étonnante, composée de triangles en acier et en verre emboîtés les uns aux autres."
