"UNESCO World Heritage Santa María de Guadalupe stands proudly beside the Guadalupe River in Cácares province. It was founded in 1340 at the spot where a shepherd found a statue of the Madonna that may have been hidden by locals to protect it from Moorish invaders in 714. The monastery, with its fairy-tale turrets, dominates the town of Cácares, which is set in a steep-sided wooded valley. King Alfonso XI of Castile visited the monastery. Attributing his success in the Battle of Rio Salado against the last African invasion in 1340 to Santa María, he later contributed to the building costs and gave the monastery royal patronage. In 1389, the Hieronymite monks took over and construction work continued. In 1496, some of the first native Caribbeans brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus were baptized here. Santa Mara de Guadalupe remained the most important cloister in Spain until the secularization of the monasteries in 1835. In the twentieth century the monastery was revived by the Franciscan Order and Pope Pius XII made it a "minor papal basilica" in 1955. The interior of the monastery is ornately decorated and contains many beautiful works of art, fine embroidered vestments, and illuminated manuscripts. The impressive Baroque sacristy is nicknamed the Spanish Sistine Chapel because of the portraits by Zurbarán hanging on the lavishly decorated walls. Visitors are allowed to touch the dress of the tiny, exquisite statue of Santa María in the ornate chamber behind the altar. The monastery symbolizes two significant events in world history that occurred in 1492: the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Catholic kings and Christopher Columbus's historic arrival in the Americas. Its famous statue ot the Virgin became a powerful symbol of the Christianization of much of the New World."

"NO IR A MISA (siguen dando la Sagrada Comunión con bozal) pero SI VISITAR EL MONASTERIO. vale 6€ pero merece la pena y es guiado. Hay a las 10:30 y a las 12. La sacristía impresionante. Luego subir a ver a la Santísima Virgen de cerca. "

"Merece mucho la pena entrar. La visita guiada en sí es una mierda, pero no hay otra forma de entrar. Es bastante impresionante"
